Those entering could choose between submitting their entry as a production made by a professional company or semi-professional production unit or as one made by individual teachers, students, learners, parents, professors, supporting staff or institutions in all educational levels or training centres. The finalists were chosen by a jury made up of 118 education and media experts from 28 countries who evaluated the MEDEA entries in late September and early October. Presentations by all 9 finalists were given during the&nbsp;Media &amp; Learning Conference 2013&nbsp;which attracted 282 participants from 41 countries and which provided an important context for this year\u2019s MEDEA Awards. The conference agenda furthermore included workshops led by previous finalists of the MEDEA Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/awards.media-and-learning.eu\/files\/photographs\/MEDEA-Awards-Ceremony-2013_02b.jpg\" alt=\"statuettes\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">French entry&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medea-awards.com\/showcase\/dans-les-murs-de-la-casbah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dans les murs de la Casbah<\/a>&nbsp;won the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medea-awards.com\/medea-award-for-professionally-produced-educational-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MEDEA Professional Production Award<\/a>&nbsp;and Spanish entry&nbsp;<em>Film English<\/em>&nbsp;won the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medea-awards.com\/medea-award-for-user-generated-educational-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MEDEA User-Generated Award<\/a>. This announcement was made during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medea-awards.com\/past-awards\/2013#ceremony\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MEDEA Awards Ceremony<\/a>&nbsp;which took place on 12 December 2013 as part of the Media &amp; Learning Conference in the Flemish Ministry of Education and Training in Brussels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Dans les murs de la Casbah<\/em>&nbsp;was represented during the Awards by C\u00e9line Dr\u00e9an. It is a visually rich web documentary which offers a new and interactive exploration of the legendary Casbah district of Algiers. It builds on university research carried out in Rennes and Algeria into urban sociolinguistics, a discipline that studies the relationship between space and language. It is made available to students as an open and freely available resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Film English<\/em>&nbsp;was represented during the Awards by Kieran Donaghy who is the driving force behind this entry. This highly engaging language learning resource website uses short films critically and creatively to not only support language teaching but also to promote Film Literacy \u2013 the ability to analyse and interpret moving images \u2013 in the language classroom. The website contains over 90 lesson plans for teachers designed around moving images, especially short films, and it is highly practical colourful, fun and meticulously organised.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/awards.media-and-learning.eu\/files\/photographs\/MEDEA-Awards-Ceremony-2013_03.jpg\" alt=\"Mathy Vanbuel\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking at the Awards ceremony, Mathy Vanbuel, Chairperson of the MEDEA Awards Judging Committee referred to the fact that music figured in many different ways in the entries of this year, sometimes as a subject matter, at other times as a means to learn other subjects such as language or even maths. Other striking trends this year are the success of very high quality web documentaries and the return of radio<br>or audio blogging for education. It was very satisfying for the judges in general to see how the overall quality of the entries has increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medea-awards.com\/special-prize-for-european-collaboration-in-the-creation-of-educational-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Collaboration Award<\/a>&nbsp;was given to&nbsp;<em>The Young Musicians of CuxAire<\/em>&nbsp;made by Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium, Germany and Titus Salt School, UK and represented at the Awards by Rachel Wilson.&nbsp;<em>The young Musicians of CuxAire<\/em>&nbsp;is a collaboratively made film that builds on the cultures, resources and imaginations of both schools. The students and teachers involved worked closely together to create not only the film but also the music for this entry. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medea-awards.com\/special-prize-for-educational-media-promoting-eu-citizenship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prize for Educational Media Encouraging Citizenship<\/a>, set up to coincide with the European Year of the same name was won by&nbsp;<em>El Viaje Inesperado<\/em>&nbsp;submitted by Escuela de Radio TEA FM from Spain and represented at the Awards by Chuse Fernandez.&nbsp;<em>El Viaje Inesperado<\/em>&nbsp;is a radio drama written and performed by members of a Spanish group working to ensure that aging adults with intellectual limitations are engaged as actively as possible in society.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/awards.media-and-learning.eu\/files\/photographs\/MEDEA-Awards-Ceremony-2013_04.jpg\" alt=\"Audience\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two additional awards were announced, the first, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medea-awards.com\/special-award-of-the-medea-jury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Special Jury Prize&nbsp;<\/a>was given to&nbsp;<em>WahaTv<\/em>&nbsp;made by the Ath\u00e9n\u00e9e L\u00e9onie de Waha, Belgium and represented at the awards by Emmanuel Chapeau, Ath\u00e9n\u00e9e L\u00e9onie de Waha and Thomas Jungblut, CAV Li\u00e8ge, Belgium in recognition of the quality and value of this highly engaging webTV school service. A second prize for the audience favourite was given to the highly popular&nbsp;<em>Deutsche lernen mit Musik<\/em>&nbsp;submitted by Deutsche Welle, German and represented at the awards by Shirin Kasraeian-Moghaddam.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/awards.media-and-learning.eu\/files\/photographs\/MEDEA-Awards-Ceremony-2013_05b.jpg\" alt=\"Finalists\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other finalists who took part in the ceremony were:&nbsp;<em>A scuola di genere<\/em>&nbsp;from Italy represented at the awards by Sandra Rumori;&nbsp;<em>Physique \u00e0 main lev\u00e9e<\/em>&nbsp;represented at the awards by Jean-Marie Blondeau and&nbsp;<em>Practice Your Music<\/em>&nbsp;from Spain represented at the awards by Unai Mimenza Gonzalez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the finalists, the Organising Committee also announced 14 entries that are Highly Commended. These are:&nbsp;<em>Anatomie 3D Lyon 1<\/em>, Universit\u00e9 Lyon 1 (France);&nbsp;<em>Cero en conducta<\/em>,Cero en conducta (Spain);&nbsp;<em>Chocolat 3b Podcast<\/em>, Ufficio scolastico di Como (Italy);&nbsp;<em>Dit is Nicolaas Rockox<\/em>, Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (Belgium);&nbsp;<em>Do\u00f1a Ferpecta<\/em>, Agora Portals International School (Spain);&nbsp;<em>Fracking explained \u2013 opportunity or danger<\/em>Philipp Dettmer Information Design (Germany);&nbsp;<em>Got Lactase?
