This initiative was part of UNESCO&#8217;s Global Media and Information Literacy Week, dedicated to enhancing global media literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Global Media and Information Literacy Week celebrated worldwide from 24-31 October 2024, culminating in a global conference hosted by UNESCO and the Hashemite Kingdom in Amman, Jordan on 30-31 October. Last year&#8217;s theme was\u00a0<em>\u201cThe New Digital Frontiers of Information: Media and Information Literacy for Public Interest Information\u201d<\/em>. It addressed the transformative impact of emerging technologies such as Generative Artificial Intelligence and the new generation of digital content creators on the production and dissemination of public-interest information, highlighting both opportunities and risks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the week, we hosted a series of online sessions and workshops in partnership with organisations such as <strong>DW Akademie, European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), MediaWise &#8211; Poynter Institute<\/strong> and <strong>Media Education Lab<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle wp-block-ub-content-toggle-block\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-block-6909f88b-76d9-4a4a-8b18-5e8cf6ab7093\" data-mobilecollapse=\"false\" data-desktopcollapse=\"true\" data-preventcollapse=\"false\" data-showonlyone=\"false\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" style=\"border-color: #f1f1f1; \" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-fffc4589-3309-4d4c-82fb-4e9977c4ce1d\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\" style=\"background-color: #f1f1f1;\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-0-6909f88b-76d9-4a4a-8b18-5e8cf6ab7093\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-6909f88b-76d9-4a4a-8b18-5e8cf6ab7093\" style=\"color: #000000; \">Monday 21 October, 14:00-15:30 CEST (Brussels time): MLA x EDMO on <strong>the Guidelines for Effective Media Literacy Initiatives<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-0-6909f88b-76d9-4a4a-8b18-5e8cf6ab7093\">\n\n<p>Official launch of the EDMO Guidelines for Effective Media Literacy Initiatives, a key resource aimed at elevating media literacy efforts across Europe and beyond. These guidelines, developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/edmo.eu\/areas-of-activities\/media-literacy\/raising-standards\/\">EDMO Working Group (formerly known as the Standards and Best Practices in Media Literacy)<\/a> with extensive input from EDMO hubs, practitioners, and experts, offer clear and practical principles for both new and ongoing media literacy initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EDMO&#8217;s goal is to strengthen public resilience against online misinformation and disinformation by providing best practices that empower, educate, and engage diverse audiences. The guidelines are structured around 12 key principles, organised into sections covering the stages of an initiative: developing, implementing, and reviewing. These principles emphasise the importance of setting clear goals, promoting critical thinking, inclusivity, ethical conduct, adaptability, and robust evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This session begun with a panel discussion featuring members of the EDMO Working Group. The session addressed the challenges AI presents, such as mistranslations, misinterpretations, content filtering, biases, and stereotypes, and discussed how these issues impact global perspectives and best practices. \">Thursday 24 October, 14:00-15:30 CET (Brussels time): MLA x DW Akademie on <strong>Media Literacy for Marginalised Communities<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-3-6909f88b-76d9-4a4a-8b18-5e8cf6ab7093\">\n\n<p>As part of UNESCO Global MIL Week and co-organised by the Media Learning Association and DW Akademie, this session highlighted exemplary media literacy approaches that foster inclusion and engagement with specific groups, such as indigenous populations, rural communities, underserved youth, and individuals with learning disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session spotlighted the work of various projects and initiatives from Africa, Latin America, Occupied Palestinian Territories, and Europe. It showcased a variety of hands-on media approaches and pedagogical methods that ensure interaction and creative learning to improve social cohesion and active dialogue. By leveraging their reach and creativity and embracing the fact that they represent their generation&#8217;s voice, organisations can amplify media literacy messages and create impactful interventions. This 90-minute EDMO training explored the collaborative process between NGOs, civil society actors, government bodies, and influencers, young content creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We discussed how to identify and engage with the right influencers, establish mutually beneficial partnerships, determine the most appropriate social media platforms and formats for various interventions, and measured the impact of these initiatives.
