These conclusions come at a critical moment which is the mid-term evaluation of the first 17 alliances and important decisions will soon have to be made regarding the future roll-out of the initiative under the new generation of EU funding programmes. In their statement, EUA stated that  &#8216;the political ambitions related to the European Universities Initiative must not overrule the strategic vision of the individual alliances. Instead, the alliances should be seen as a part of larger processes including the European Education Area (EEA), the European Research Area (ERA) and especially the Bologna Process&#8217;.
