{"id":3812,"date":"2019-05-31T11:55:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T09:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/?p=3812"},"modified":"2023-01-20T10:28:33","modified_gmt":"2023-01-20T09:28:33","slug":"informal-learning-through-film-results-of-a-significant-universitat-autonoma-de-barcelona-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/type\/featured-articles\/informal-learning-through-film-results-of-a-significant-universitat-autonoma-de-barcelona-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Informal learning through film \u2013 results of a significant Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de\nBarcelona (UAB) research shows substantial impacts on children\u2019s critical and\ncommunication skills, engagement with curriculum subjects and appetite for\nfilms amongst children involved in film club pilot projects in Lithuania and Georgia\nfunded by Creative Europe MEDIA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Higham from Film\nLiteracy Europe (FLE) shared publicly for the first time at this spring\u2019s\nFebiofest \u2013 Prague International Film Festival new independent research by\nUniversitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona (UAB) into film literacy projects in\nLithuania, Georgia and Latvia that builds on UAB\u2019s previous research on FLE supported\nprojects in Romania and Spain and Cyprus and Mark Higham\u2019s previous work at\nFILMCLUB in the UK earlier this decade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo be introduced\nto the numbers about the teacher\u2019s and student\u2019s views about the impact of\nattending the film clubs and in general children engagement with film was very\nimportant. The three pilots were organised by the Lithuanian Film Centre, the Georgian National Film Center and the National Film Centre of Latvia in partnership with Film Literacy Europe. The pilots were supported by the ministries of education and culture in each territory and funded by Creative Europe MEDIA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UAB research now builds a highly compelling\npicture of the power of film literacy to develop key skills and support\nlearning and audience development adding to the UK experience. In Romania,\nSpain, Lithuania &amp; Georgia captured interesting feedback from teachers\nabout student\u2019s benefits of participation in film clubs showing that it increases\nchildren\u2019s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>critical thinking \u2013 77% of\nteachers in Lithuania, 73% in Latvia and 69% Georgia, 97% Romania, 85% Spain (it\nwas 81% UK)<\/li><li>communications skills &#8211; 40%\nLithuania, 72% Latvia and 62% Georgia<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI think\npositively of the film club activities. I am very grateful, because my students\nthat used to be noted for extremely low motivation have joined the activity\nwith great enthusiasm, which improved their achievements in Lithuanian classes\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt is a\nvery meaningful activity. The films are exciting and have high educational\nvalue. The film club boosts creativity, shapes capability to discuss and\nexpress opinion, and helps develop social skills\u201d <\/em><strong>UAB interviews with leaders\n2018<\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research also shows that participation in film\nclubs led to children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>watching more films at home\n&#8211; 77% Lithuania, 58% Latvia, 69% Georgia, 57% Spain and 71% Romania (86% UK)<\/li><li>going to the cinema more\noften &#8211; 71% Lithuania, 46% Latvia, 84% Georgia, 33% Spain, 17% Romania (14% UK)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2018 research captured feedback from students in\nLithuania &amp; Georgia who say being involved in their film club has helped\nthem with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>national language &amp;\nliterature studies \u2013 80% of students in Lithuania, 74% Georgia (75% UK)<\/li><li>history studies &#8211; &nbsp;86% Lithuania, 82% Georgia (44% UK)<\/li><li>foreign language studies \u2013 79%\nLithuania, 62% Georgia (UK 29%)<\/li><li>civic education and ethics \u2013\n77% Lithuania, 85% Georgia (UK 24%)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This study provides the hard\nfacts to reinforce David Putnam\u2019s prescient description of the value of film,\nmore relevant than ever:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cFilm, more than any other\nmedium, reflects back to us our dreams and our aspirations, and it does so in\nways that can remain with us a long time after we\u2019ve left the cinema. It\nenables them to see the world through the eyes of others, and to seek out and\nmaybe even create a level of tolerance and respect for the viewpoint of others\n\u2013 something that, at this point in our history, may well be more critical than\never.\u201d <\/em><strong>Lord\nPuttnam, film producer &amp; educationalist, speaking to film club leaders in UK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film club model adapted by each country into a bespoke version has been shown to have some consistent benefits. At a time when small incremental impacts in education are rightly celebrated, these research findings from Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona, are significant indeed.
