{"id":42298,"date":"2025-08-04T10:51:36","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T08:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/?p=42298"},"modified":"2025-08-04T16:27:40","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T14:27:40","slug":"media-literacy-education-in-south-korea-in-the-age-of-ai-and-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/subject\/media-literacy\/media-literacy-education-in-south-korea-in-the-age-of-ai-and-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Media Literacy Education in South Korea in the Age of AI and Information"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>by <strong>Sihyun Park,<\/strong> Korea Press Foundation, Korea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 2025, public discourse in Korea is intensifying around the importance of media literacy education, in response to rapid developments such as the widespread use of generative AI, the proliferation of disinformation, and excessive exposure to digital information. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meca.or.kr\/home?type=MEDIA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Korea Press Foundation (KPF)<\/a><\/strong>, in collaboration with schools and educators, operates hands-on media literacy programs nationwide covering a wide range of topics\u2014including news, video, advertising, and AI. In step with this trend, KPF is expanding its dedicated teams and working to establish a more systematic and strategic foundation for implementation across the country<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. School-based, customised media literacy programs <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, KPF collaborates with thousands of schools to dispatch professional instructors who run classes using content such as news, video, AI, and advertising. In 2025 in particular, tailored instruction has been strengthened to address the needs of specific groups and learning levels, some of which include AI literacy, customized lessons for multicultural schools, and media education for students with disabilities. Flagship programs include \u201cRonnie\u2019s Media Explorers\u201d for lower-grade elementary students and the \u201cAI Literacy Classroom\u201d for middle school students. In 2024 alone, more than 46,000 students participated, and over 900 schools are expected to join in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Capacity-building and resource support for educators<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing the key role of teachers, KPF offers KPF offers professional training programs, online lectures, and intensive academies to enhance teacher competency and expand classroom implementation at the same time. The foundation also operates a media educator certification system to train professional media instructors beyond schoolteachers, and also provides training programs for these instructors. Moreover, over 3,000 teaching materials and lesson plans tailored by age group and learner type have been developed and shared with schools and local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Public engagement and awareness campaigns <\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"647\" src=\"https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/files\/2025\/08\/Instructional-Material-Cover_Game-Literacy-Manual-for-Teacher-and-Parents-.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42382\" style=\"width:234px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/files\/2025\/08\/Instructional-Material-Cover_Game-Literacy-Manual-for-Teacher-and-Parents-.png 460w, https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/files\/2025\/08\/Instructional-Material-Cover_Game-Literacy-Manual-for-Teacher-and-Parents--213x300.png 213w, https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/files\/2025\/08\/Instructional-Material-Cover_Game-Literacy-Manual-for-Teacher-and-Parents--370x520.png 370w, https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/files\/2025\/08\/Instructional-Material-Cover_Game-Literacy-Manual-for-Teacher-and-Parents--270x380.png 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Game Literacy Manual for Teachers and Parents<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Through initiatives such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkathon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the fact-checking competition (Checkathon)<\/a> for adolescents and a nationwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xn--ok0ba883aba238rca497fea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">News Reading, News Diary Contest<\/a> open to the general public, KPF supports both youth and adults in gaining hands-on experience in independently analyzing and presenting news and information. In addition, the foundation fosters widespread public engagement with media literacy by employing diverse formats\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bMdL6uQ77i0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including original music and music videos<\/a>, citizen participation events, exhibitions, theatrical performances, and broadcast collaborations\u2014to promote a deeper understanding of media literacy and encourage its practical application in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on its established experience in media literacy education, KPF seeks to actively engage in knowledge exchange, joint projects, and personnel exchange with international educational institutions and media literacy organizations.
