Artificial Intelligence is already transforming educational media production. AI can generate transcripts, subtitles, summaries and even edit videos. Yet there is still one major limitation: most AI tools work in isolation and cannot easily access the software and services that we use every day. This is where the Model Context Protocol (MCP) comes in. Developed as an open standard, MCP provides a common way for AI assistants to communicate securely with other applications. Rather than copying files manually between systems, an AI assistant could work directly with video repositories, media asset management systems, learning platforms, cloud storage and editing software. Imagine asking an AI assistant: “Find last year’s lecture on renewable energy, create a three-minute highlight video, generate subtitles in five languages, upload the final version to the university’s media platform and add it to the Moodle course.” MCP is designed to make this kind of workflow possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The technology is still emerging, but it is much closer to practical use than we realise. Major AI providers are adopting the standard, and there are already MCP connectors for services such as Microsoft 365, Google Drive, SharePoint and other cloud platforms. Specialist media applications such as Panopto, Kaltura, Vimeo and professional video editing software have not yet widely adopted MCP, but most already provide APIs, making future integration technically straightforward. For AV production and media teams, the advantages can be significant. AI assistants will be able to carry out routine tasks automatically, such as searching media files in archives, creating transcripts, translating subtitles, generating metadata and publishing content across multiple platforms. Less time will be needed for repetitive production work and more time for creating engaging learning experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MCP is unlikely to replace existing traditional production tools, but it could become the layer that connects them, allowing AI to coordinate entire media workflows. If adoption continues at its current pace, MCP could become as important to AI as USB became for connecting computer devices: an open standard that allows different systems to work together seamlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
