SHARP: "Teaching and Learning Digital Media" Pedagogical Kit

S.H.A.R.P European network introduces a new and FREE pedagogical resource for professionals interested in media education and new technologies.

The pedagogical kit "Teaching and Learning Digital Media" is intended for teachers, educators, trainers and others who want to improve their competences in the field of education about and through new media technologies. The central areas of inquiry are images (still imagery, films, videos) and web tool creation and application (platforms for information searches, for sharing, for producing media content, etc.).

The material is based on the educational experiences engendered during the S.H.A.R.P project by the different partners within their own contexts. These projects were conducted with different targets (e.g. students, teachers, adults, elderly people, minorities) and with particular topics (chosen from the main themes of Sharp: identity, memory, territory....) in mind.

The information presented in the kit sheds light on the main theme of the S.H.A.R.P (Sharing and RePresenting) from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The five theoretical chapters of the kit aim to provide help in answering the five main questions below. They can be used to plan and implement trainings "about and with media"; to work with ICT in the didactic field; to analyse and produce images and films with a school class, with university students or in adult education; and to facilitate social enquiries with given groups. The five questions are:

1. How can I plan a project?

2. How can I didacticise ICT in a project?

3. How can I analyse images, film and sound?

4. How can I produce images and films?

5. How can I collect significant social resources?

The kit also contains a series of practical examples on using new media for developing media skills. You can find a detailed description of nine workshops conducted by S.H.A.R.P partners from 7 EU countries: Italy, France, Portugal, Cyprus, Lithuania, Romania and Bulgaria.

ActiveWatch is the Romanian partner of the project and we contributed to the kit with Chapter 7: Visual Language and Representation of Reality.

The entire pedagogical kit is available for FREE in English and some chapters were translated into Romanian by local partner. Soon, the material will also be available in French.

The French website 1jour1actu - Des outils pour mieux comprendre l'info contains hundreds of contents (articles, videos, activities, dossiers, games, interactive sheets) on many different topics, ranging from Art, Literature, History, Biology, Science, to media literacy, sport, actualities.
The contents are aimed at the use in primary education classrooms. Each content is composed by attractive images, clear and short texts and a list of related contents for further deepening.
The teacher section provides them with “The highlights of the week”, files to download for the use in the classroom and an overview of the news and activities of the week.


Musique(s) is a free online tool for music education that provides the users with a fun and easy way to learn about music instruments and styles. The description texts come along with sound contents that greatly help recognise the different instruments and play a fundamental role in the programme.
The programme include plain information as well as test quizzes and games.

Free auto-training module on plagiarism and the right to quote

Ce module comporte cinq parties:
- une première définit la notion de plagiat et livre quelques exemples, c'est-à-dire sept pratiques qui peuvent être qualifiées de plagiaires; cette première partie livre aussi des chiffres sur le plagiat et propose les moyens de l'éviter;
- la deuxième partie titrée "Citer correctement ses sources" n'est qu'une suite logique de la première; y sont présentées les règles de la citation et de la paraphrase;
- les trois dernières parties proposent des conseils, un quiz et un résumé à l'utilisateur.

Ce module est offert sous une licence Creative Commons. Il sera utile aussi bien aux étudiants qu'aux formateurs qui pourront s'en servir dans le cadre de l'apprentissage de la culture informationnelle.


This is an online free module of auto-training about plagiarism and the right to quote. It consists of five parts:
- the first part defines plagiarism and gives some examples, that is to say, seven practices that can be described as plagiarists; this first part gives also some figures on plagiarism and suggests ways to avoid it;
- the second part titled "Quoting your sources correctly" is a logical continuation of the first and contains an overview of the rules of citation and paraphrase;
- the last three sections provide tips, a quiz and a summary to the user.

This module is available under a Creative Commons license. It will be useful to both students and instructors that can use it in learning about information literacy.

Jog the Web - Assembly content packages from the web

Jog The Web is an engaging interactive tool that allows users to assemble tidy packages of web content. Teachers can use it for providing students with easy access to guided learning activities.
The websites within a Jog can be explored right within the page frame, solving the problems related to students getting lost within multiple windows. Jog authors can annotate pages within the Jog and also create original pages with unique content.
On the website are stored all the packages assembled by others in a library formed by almost 18000 contents that users are free to browse and explore. More than 11000 of them are in the category ‘education’.

World Intellectual Property Organization

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is the United Nations agency dedicated to the use of intellectual property as a means of stimulating innovation and creativity. It presently counts 185 member states. It promotes the development and use of the international IP system through services, laws, infrastructures and development. It also works with the member states and stakeholders to improve understanding and respect for IP worldwide.
On its website WIPO provides general information about intellectual property (IP) and the deriving rights (IPR) and news as well as information about the services, activities and resources useful to who wants to learn or keep up about the various fields and aspects where IP intervenes.
The content of the section “WIPO Academy” more directly deals with IPR in training, teaching and research.

Ptable is an interactive Web 2.0 periodic table. It provides dynamic layouts, property trend visualization, orbitals, thousands of isotopes, and 5 writeup sources. The application uses no Flash or images, giving all the scalability and accessibility of a normal web page (it can be viewed on any kind of computer and device).
The layout, unless differently specified by the user, automatically switch to fit the width of the screen. Using the check boxes at the top of the page allows to dynamically switch between various configurations (simple, with names, with electron configuration, and inline inner transition metals).
In addition to Wikipedia descriptions in all languages, write-ups, photos, videos, and even podcasts are offered in the first tab's dropdown. Write-up windows can even be torn off or docked to the edges to allow simultaneous use of the table while reading.
Data is acquired from primary sources and curated libraries. Layout and presentation were reviewed by the world's foremost periodic table academic, Eric Scerri. Translations and non-English element names, however, should be considered no more reliable than Wikipedia.
Search (into the box at the top right) can be performed by name, symbol, or atomic number. Advanced searches work, for example, on the atomic weight, number of orbitals, etc.
Most browsers, tablets, and phones can store the site and its data for use offline. Firefox prompts you with a notification bar at the top while Chrome and Safari directly save it.

Turnitin is an effective online technology for improving student writing. It is used by educators worldwide (over 60 million papers were processed in 2011) to check students' papers for originality, to enable web-based peer review and for digital grading of student work.
Its most used and famous feature is OriginalityCheck, the plagiarism prevention tool. It ensures original work by checking submitted papers against billions of web pages, millions of student papers and leading library databases and publications. Originality Reports provide a summary of matching or highly similar text found in a submitted paper.
Another important tool, GradeMark, allows an instructor to edit and grade student papers online. The instructor can add comments within the body of the paper, point out grammar and punctuation mistakes, evaluate the paper against qualitative or quantitative rubrics, etc.
A third tool is PeerMark: Instructors can create and manage PeerMark assignments that allow students to read, review, and evaluate one or many papers submitted by their classmates.
Turnitin integrates with more than 50 Course Management Systems, including Blackboard, Moodle, Instructure Canvas, Desire2Learn, Pearson Learning Studio, and Sakai.
