Patient Safety - Mildred's Story

This film, based on real life experiences, created by Jon Shears video producer at the University of Leicester (http://www2.le.ac.uk), follows elderly patient Mildred from suffering a stroke, through a number of experiences in hospital to a final life-threatening incident. This fictional story is aimed primarily at student doctors to explore and discuss patient safety issues and to provide tools for dealing with problems.

Court introduction

This web-based court introduction (Rättegångsskolan på webben), created by the lawyer and information officer Ulf Hjerppe and administered by the Crime Victim Compensation and Support Authority (http://www.brottsoffermyndigheten.se), explains what happens before, during and after court proceedings to those people who are required to make an appearance in court (crime victims, witnesses, relatives and perpetrators).

The Green Energy

The Greek programme “Green Energy” is an educational documentary created in 2008 by the Educational RadioTelevision of the Greek Ministry of Education about renewable sources of energy.
It is available on TV, DVD and the Internet and it highlights the types of “green energy” that can substitute petroleum and petrolic byproducts in Mediterranean countries are demonstrated in an educational Centre of Renewable Sources of Energy. Pupils of secondary schools can view this documentary as part of their environment education, but teachers can of course use the video continuously in other lessons and throughout the year.

By viewing this documentary and discussing it in class, pupils can:
- get to know the types of green energy (solar energy, wind energy, geothermic energy and biomass)
- learn how they are utilized
- realize the environmental, economical and social consequences in modern societies
- promote green energy as a shield to climate changes.

The main element of Pronunciation Tips is a series of 44 free videos from BBC Learning English showing the sounds of English. These videos encourage the user to not only practice the sounds of English but also to learn and use the phonetic symbols that represent them.

Five Little Ducks

The video clip Five Little Ducks is a stop-motion animation which preschool students made in class. The target students are preschool students. As an exercise in counting the numbers backwards, the children learnt the nursery rhyme, 5 little ducks, so it was with great enthusiasm that they agreed to animate the ducks. The stop-motion animation was produced and entered in the MEDEA Awards 2008 by Miriam Schembri of the Fgura Primary School in Malta.

The Big Myth

The Big Myth is an interactive, community-building learning website and CD-ROM, presenting a collection of 25 creation myths from around the world using Flash animation, storytelling, sound and music. It is available in English and Dutch and designed for group learning for ages 7-14. The myths themselves are the central focus of the site, but the entire environment is made up of six sections, including a Teachers Guide, Discussion Forum, Write Your Own Creation Myth area and Library, making it a fully-integrated educational website that fits in with religious studies or world cultural program of the common international curriculum, as well as within ancient history or even remedial English or Dutch language classes.

Unseen Voices

Created by Sergio López Figueroa in partnership with Brent Council and delivered by Big Bang Lab, Unseen Voices is an interdisciplinary outreach project aiming to engage young people and the community through creative participatory practice using film archives, photographs and live original music. The project helps to create awareness of the importance of remembrance, commemoration, peacekeeping and human rights in today´s world. The main output is to connect historical and contemporary issues such as discrimination, racism and gang violence by looking at the past and creating a debate among students, teachers and the community.

In two-week workshops a group of music students learn the history of the second World War, the Holocaust and Kindertransport (youth refugees in 1939) by learning how to create a film entirely by re-using archive film footage and photography and editing digitised clips, learn where and how to research, copyright issues, make the storyboard and the film, compose the music with support of Music Leader and finally perform live at the Holocaust Memorial Day with the Unseen Voices film in Wembley Town Hall in January 2008.
At a second stage, an educational DVD was produced as a learning resource and distributed to 100 schools in the Borough including four mini documentaries of the whole process and further resources including web resources for the use of teachers and other schools.

PLURAL+ Video Competition

PLURAL+ is a video competition organised by the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations in cooperation with partners around the world that aims to involve youth in addressing the key challenges in their communities related to migrant integration, inclusiveness, identity, diversity, human rights and social cohesiveness.
You can register to view the 2009 entries which are included on the UNESCO audiovisual e-platform where you will also find a fascinating selection of programmes that really highlight the power of video in addressing core social questions around the globe.

Özge Karaoğlu's blog about educational media

This is a very nice blog by Özge Karaoğlu, who wrote the storyline of Daisy and Drago, winner project of the MEDEA Award for Creativity and Innovation 2009 (http://www.medea-awards.com/daisy-and-drago). She works as the leader of the kindergarten department and as an English teacher at Terakki Foundation School (Turkey), using new developing Web 2.0 technologies in her teaching and writing about how to use these technologies in language education on her personal blog.
