Workshop “Developing documentaries in schools”
Educational Radiotelevision (EduTV) organised the MEDEAnet workshop “Developing documentaries in schools” on 5-7 April 2013 in Athens, Greece. The workshop was dedicated at primary and secondary level teachers who already have a prior experience in video production, basic knowledge in ICT, and Web 2.0 tools.
Lead speaker of the workshop was the Film director and Media Educator, Maria Leonida. She focused on methodologies related to documentary, exploring how various tools and resources can be used to enhance creativity in schools and finally understanding how documentary can be a multimodal, effective, informative and expressive medium. During the 3-day workshop the 24 participants learnt about ways to refine their shooting and editing techniques, enhance their creative techniques, focus on methodologies and educational content that could make teaching exciting and attractive to young people.
Sofia Papadimitriou (EduTV, Greece) presented the whole activities of the MEDEAnet project and how to publish and disseminate videos in social media and embed them in learning environments.
In addition, two successful webinars were held on Saturday and Sunday morning, exchanging experiences of creating videos with other European teachers. Sally Reynolds (ATiT, Belgium) first presented the history of MEDEA Awards and the experience of teachers’ training in media and the challenges that are emerged. In particular, Annamaria Lisotti (Italy) talked about the recordings of Science experiments in the classroom with her pupils and Anca Irimina (Romania) presented the use of video in a vocational school of Romania and her relevant experience. An active discussion was developed after their presentations, providing a good opportunity for the participants to ask questions about best practices of using the video in classroom settings.
Petros Michailidis, the winner of MEDEA Awards in the category “User-Generated Educational Media” last year, presented via Skype the ways he creates videos with his pupils and how he integrates this process in the curriculum.
PowToon - video creation
PowToon is a nice service for creating explanatory videos through a drag and drop process.
The mission is to "create the world’s most minimalist, user friendly and intuitive presentation software that allows someone with no technical or design skills to create engaging professional “look and feel” animated presentations".
The videos that users create feature digital paper cut-outs on a colorful background. This online tool let users create videos in the style made popular by Common Craft. It provides drawings of people and objects that users can arrange on blank canvas. After adding their narration to the arrangement users can publish their videos.
On the website (http://www.powtoon.com/tutorials/) there is a collection of tutorials on how to use the service.
PowToon's offers a free version for educators (http://www.powtoon.com/pricing/edu/), but it’s limited to 30 days and it limits videos to 45 seconds.
The service is in Beta version.
Pixorial - video creation
Pixorial is an online video creation tool with an intuitive user interface.
To create a video in Pixorial users can upload pictures and raw video footage then organize that media into the sequence in which users want it to appear. They can insert transitions between elements by selecting them from the transitions gallery. If they would like to add a soundtrack to your production they can select one from the Pixorial gallery or upload your own audio files. Pixorial also makes it easy to add text to each picture or video that users upload.
All basic accounts include 7 GB of free storage, enough room for about 150 average-length videos
Pixorial offers a free plan to educators (http://www.pixorial.com/educators/). The educators' plan provides 30GB of free storage. Pixorial offers Android and iOS apps too.
Wideo is an online platform providing the users with a way to create, edit and share their videos for free. The service is web-based so the only requirement is a browser. Users can choose (or upload) the images, fonts, animations, videos and audios. By uploading one’s own audio it is possible to make videos with voiceover explanations.
The system is currently in Beta version.
Embedplus – editing Youtube videos for education
This free application facilitates the embedding, editing and customization of Youtube videos.
Among the most important features of Embedplus:

The website contains also a special page about how the application can be used in the context of teaching / training. Using EmbedPlus teachers will be able to :

• Offer additional information beyond what is presented in a video using annotations.
Students on their part can use it to:
• Get a closer and clearer understanding of video contents covering complicated events using the slow motion and zoom effects that EmbedPus offers
• Easily access their videos and view text and other objects within a video
Tubechop is an online resource that allows to easily chop a funny or interesting section from any YouTube video and share it via a link, an embed code or through the main social networks. The chopped section can be rated and commented.
This resource can be useful to take out interesting or relevant sections from longer videos and start a discussion also via the possibility to post comments.
Jonatan Academy is a project for creating educational videos in Dutch for elementary schools.
The videos present on the website have been made by 11-year-old kids for younger students to learn the basics of Mathematics and Dutch language. The normal making process for these videos includes a script, the elaboration of visual material in Powerpoint and the publication on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/user/jonatanschool).
These videos are thought as integration or repetition to what students learn from the teacher, to help them memorise better the concepts explained.
The website also contains instructions and tools that can be useful for medium and high school students and for teachers as a guide to an interesting and useful activity.

Deze video's worden beschouwd als herhaling of bijkomende leerstof van wat de leerlingen zelf van de leerkracht leren, om hen zo te helpen beter de uitgelegde begrippen te onthouden. De website bevat ook instructies en hulpmiddelen die handig kunnen zijn voor studenten uit het middelbaar en voor leerkrachten als gids voor een interessante en bruikbare les.
WeVideo is an online videoediting platform, easy to use and for collaborative working.
After uploading video clips and photos it's possible to directly create storylines and edit them in the cloud: it's all made in the browser without downloading any software. The platform works well also on tablet and smartphone.
It's possible to collaborate with others on video stories co-creating the same video or coming up with unique versions from the clips in the cloud-based video library.
On the website it's possible to choose the free account or among 3 other kinds of accounts.
The website also contains tutorials on the use of the platform.
One of the grat advantages is the easy way to share and collaborate on video and the easy way of publishing to any of te existing social media that support video.

Animoto provides an array of tools for creating videos in the classroom. Educators can apply for a free Animoto account for use in the classroom to create presentations incorporating images, video clips, music and text.
With the Cinematic Artificial Intelligence technology, Animoto analyzes and combines user-selected images, video clips and music, taking into account every nuance of a song - the genre, song structure, rhythm, instrumentation, and vocals. Animoto automatically orchestrates a custom video mixing relevant messaging, statistics and quotes among the pictures to educate the audience. Videos can be shared via email, on a blog/website, exported to YouTube, or downloaded to a computer for use in presentations.
