Creating video in a virtual world for language educators

Using videos in the real life classroom is a great motivator for language learners.
The Camelot project ( CreAting Machinima Empowers Live Online language Teaching and learning) 2-year EU funded project for language educators to learn how to create videos (machinima) in virtual worlds. (Dec 2013-Nov 2015). it aims to promote the role of video production in language teacher training. It is innovative in that it takes one of the latest technologies – machinima – and uses it to empower 21st century language learning and teaching through the use of a) user-generated video content, b) a task-based language teaching approach based on learner engagement, authenticity and creativity, and c) an online community of practice in which open educational resources (OERs) are available via a repository.

Creating video in schools

This presentation proposes a methodology on creating a video in school as a collaborative learning activity.
Creating a video in school, pupils can express their thoughts, views and ideas and cultivate their skills through a creative and collaborative process. The methodology follows five basic steps from the first idea till the publishing and disseminating of the video. Furthermore, additional resources are listed about the filming language, audiovisual expression, virtual workshops and the software of video processing.

The BLOSSOMS Video Library contains lessons to use in your classroom. Every lesson is a complete resource that includes video segments, a teacher’s guide, downloadable hand-outs and a list of additional online resources relevant to the topic. MIT carefully crafts each BLOSSOMS lesson to make your classroom come alive. Each 50-minute lesson builds on math and science fundamentals by relating abstract concepts to the real world. The lessons intersperse video instruction with planned exercises that engage students in problem solving and critical thinking, helping students build the kind of gut knowledge that comes from hands-on experience. By guiding students through activities from beginning to end, BLOSSOMS lessons give students a sense of accomplishment and excitement.
While MIT faculty members and partnering educators in Jordan and Pakistan created the first BLOSSOMS lessons, today educators from around the world create and submit BLOSSOMS modules. MIT Blossoms welcomes contributors to join their international online community to learn more about their videos and to engage with educators worldwide who are looking for ways to enrich their students' classroom experiences and share their ideas.

Using media to support learning from pre-school through to University

The Greek Ministry of Education - Educational RadioTelevision, along with the University of Crete - Faculty of Education, Department of Preschool Education, organised the scientific meeting 'Using media to support learning from pre-school through to University' on 31 May 2013 in Greece. This meeting explored how the use of media supports learning and provided not only the means to enhance the learning process and make it more accessible and engaging as media can also play a significant role in fostering creativity and innovation. The event brought together several experts and experienced practitioners who shared their ideas and experiences in creating and using media resources to support learning in various contexts, the importance of media literacy and role of communities of practice at a European level in supporting the exchange of experience and know-how.

Sofia Papadimitriou presented Educational RadioTelevision (Greece), a multimedia platform connected to social networks which offers students and teachers the environment and the tools to design and create their own multimedia projects. She also presented the methodology for the pedagogical use of video in class and the benefits of publishing and disseminating videos in social networks.

Michail Kalogiannakis, lecturer at the Department of Preschool Education at the University of Crete in Greece explored the use of digital media in early childhood education.

Sally Reynolds from ATiT (Belgium) presented the MEDEA Awards and showed samples of award-winning entries as well as presented the new Media & Learning Association and the many communications and collaboration channels associated with the Media & Learning network.

Mathy Vanbuel from ATiT (Belgium) presented REC:all and the potential of lecture capture in universities and higher education institutions.

Get Creative is a short (6 mins) film that covers the basics of Creative Commons: it starts off with the example of an album of the White Stripes and then continues to explain how Creatove Commons turns the copyright issue around by encouraging people to make their media reusable from the stage of creation. PowToon - video creation

PowToon is a nice service for creating explanatory videos through a drag and drop process.
The mission is to "create the world’s most minimalist, user friendly and intuitive presentation software that allows someone with no technical or design skills to create engaging professional “look and feel” animated presentations".
The videos that users create feature digital paper cut-outs on a colorful background. This online tool let users create videos in the style made popular by Common Craft. It provides drawings of people and objects that users can arrange on blank canvas. After adding their narration to the arrangement users can publish their videos.
On the website (http://www.powtoon.com/tutorials/) there is a collection of tutorials on how to use the service.
PowToon's offers a free version for educators (http://www.powtoon.com/pricing/edu/), but it’s limited to 30 days and it limits videos to 45 seconds.
The service is in Beta version.
