Decoding Extremism: How Media Literacy can counter Online Radicalisation

In today’s digital landscape, online radicalization is a growing concern and the internet has become a powerful tool for extremist groups to recruit, radicalise, and spread their ideologies. Online radicalization is fueled by echo chambers, algorithm-driven content, and false narratives that exploit emotional and psychological vulnerabilities. Understanding how these mechanisms work is crucial for developing effective countermeasures.

In this session, we will analyse the role of algorithms, echo chambers, and recommendation systems in amplifying radical content. We will explore how false narratives spread and how they shape extremist ideologies, and most importantly, discuss practical strategies for educators to build digital resilience. From counter-narratives to media literacy interventions, participants will gain tools to help individuals recognise, resist, and counteract radical messaging in their communities.
