EMIF launches SAFE Initiative

The Support and Assistance Facility for Experts (SAFE), launched by the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF), is now open for applications until 27 February 2026. This pilot initiative addresses the growing threats faced by journalists, fact-checkers, researchers, and media organisations working to combat disinformation across Europe. Recent assessments from the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) and the European Parliament confirm a troubling rise in physical violence, online harassment, strategic lawsuits, and digital surveillance targeting these professionals.

SAFE aims to provide critical assistance to ensure that individuals and organisations can continue their vital work in building a trustworthy, fact-based digital environment. The facility has a total allocation of 150,000€, offering financial support of up to 10,000€ per request for activities lasting up to three months. Eligible uses include securing legal aid, enhancing digital security, accessing psychological support, documenting hostile incidents, and organising emergency training to respond effectively to harassment or cyberattacks.

In this pilot phase, applications are welcomed exclusively from current and past EMIF grantees, fact-checking organisations belonging to the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN), and member organisations of EDMO Network consortia. Requests are assessed individually based on urgent needs and compelling evidence, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

By supporting counter-disinformation professionals in facing these challenges, SAFE reinforces the resilience of Europe’s media ecosystem and protects the individuals at the forefront of defending truth in the digital age.
