Lessons about journalism and disinformation

The Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision (BENEDMO) has updated and expanded a four-part educational program to help upper secondary school students (HAVO and VMBO) navigate journalism and disinformation. Originally developed under the Erasmus+ funded SMILES project, the lessons have been enriched with new content and translations.

The program begins with an introduction to journalism, explaining the importance of news, how journalists work, and the challenges they face. Subsequent lessons focus on disinformation – its definition, forms, and dissemination strategies. It includes hands-on activities, such as creating fake disinformation campaigns, helping students understand manipulation techniques and building resilience against misinformation.

Each lesson includes presentations, walkthroughs, and worksheets, with comprehensive teacher guides for easy implementation. While the modules work best sequentially, they can also be taught individually.
