The application to establish a UNESCO Chair in Communication, Media Information Literacy and Citizenship at ESCS (School of Communication and Media Studies)/ Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon has been favourably evaluated by UNESCO. The agreement signed between ESCS / IPL and the United Nation’s organisation will be valid for the next 4 years. Coordinated by Fernanda Bonacho, and João Abreu, the Chair in Communication, Media Information Literacy and Citizenship is the first UNESCO Chair specialising in Communication and MIL in Portugal.
The goals of ESCS Chair are aligned with the 2030 Agenda and the UNESCO strategy for 2022-29 and it will work to:
- ensure quality, equitable and inclusive education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all to reduce inequalities and promote learning and creative societies;
- promote science, technology, innovation and the natural heritage work towards sustainable societies and the protection of the environment;
- promote freedom of expression, cultural diversity, education for global citizenship, and protect the heritage to build inclusive, just and peaceful societies; and
- develop and disseminate knowledge and skills and ethical standards to foster a technological environment in the service of humankind.
