Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform that is the outcome of a project with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. In Kahoot! users can create multiple-choice quizzes, so called “kahoots”, that are based on a presentation (PowerPoint, Keynote or PDF) that can be accessed via a web browser or using the Kahoot app. Kahoot! is comparable to Socrative or Quizlet and has become a popular educational platform in schools. Kahoot! allows for different question types: the multiple-choice quiz is the default type with an added option to choose “single select” or “multi-select” answers from the paid Pro version or higher. Other options are the open-ended questions or puzzles, image reveal, audio in questions and also video in questions: both YouTube and Vimeo videos can easily be linked to play inside Kahoot! The integration of video inside an interactive learning game allows for assessment of learning progress and can be useful to evaluate the learning effectiveness of educational media. Recent evaluation concludes that Kahoot!’s educational value is highest when it is the students that create quizzes of relevant topics because it requires them to use creativity and other 21st century skills.
