INFINITE: Reimagining Higher Education with AI

Transnational Report, AI Literacy Toolkit, and Digital Hub

by Katsiaryna Palishchuk, ALL DIGITAL, Belgium

We are pleased to announce the release of three key resources developed by the INFINITE project:  Transnational Report,  AI Digital Literacy Toolkit , and AI Digital Hub.  These outputs are designed to support educators, students, and academic institutions in navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Higher Education (HE) — a sector undergoing profound transformation, marked by both exciting opportunities and complex challenges.

As a first step, the INFINITE project -committed to empowering the HE community to harness AI for professional and pedagogical innovation – conducted a comprehensive transnational study across five European countries: Cyprus, Greece, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Ireland.

Through a combination of desk research and a needs-analysis survey involving 259 HE staff and students, the study examined the current state of AI adoption in higher education, highlighting its applications, challenges, and implications for key stakeholders.

The findings underline AI’s transformative potential across HE, from streamlining administrative tasks and advancing research to enhancing teaching through personalised learning, improved accessibility, and greater student engagement. However, the study also reveals significant challenges. Ethical concerns – such as data privacy and algorithmic bias – emerged as critical issues, alongside the need for continuous professional development and concerns about the reliability of AI tools.

Another pressing concern is the potential overreliance on AI and its impact on students’ critical thinking skills. The report stresses the importance of aligning AI use with existing curricula and providing clear, practical guidance for implementation.

The Transnational Report presents a clear roadmap for responsible AI integration in HE, calling for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach that includes ethical frameworks, targeted training, and accessible, reliable AI tools.

Building on the research findings, we are pleased to introduce the AI Digital Literacy Toolkit—a practical resource developed to empower HE faculty, staff, and students to integrate AI into their academic and professional practices, regardless of their prior experience with the technology. It provides:

  • Clear Definitions and Foundational Knowledge:  The Toolkit is equipped with definitions of key terms and notions related to the use of AI in HE. Understanding these fundamentals is crucial for effectively leveraging AI in your teaching and ensures everyone starts with a solid foundation.  We explore the role of these advanced technologies in education, outlining both the exciting possibilities and the potential challenges.
  • Practical Guidance and Best Practices:  The toolkit goes beyond theory, offering practical guidance and best practices for integrating AI into your HE setting.  We provide real-world examples and adaptable strategies that HEIs can easily implement.
  • A Self-Assessment Checklist:  Not sure where to start? Our comprehensive checklist helps HE academics assess their current AI readiness. Identify your strengths and areas for development to create a personalised learning path.
  • A Visual Framework for Tool Selection:  Choosing the right AI tool can be overwhelming. Our visual framework simplifies the process by guiding you through the selection of the most appropriate AI-based tools for your specific professional and pedagogical needs.

How will this toolkit be of benefit to you?

  • Stay Ahead of the Curve: Equip yourself with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of AI in education.
  • Unlock the Potential of AI: Discover how AI can transform your teaching and enhance student learning.

The AI Literacy Toolkit marks a significant step forward in empowering the higher education community to confidently embrace AI, reimagine academic practices, and prepare a future-ready generation of learners and educators. By blending research-based insights, ethical guidance, hands-on tools, and tailored support strategies, INFINITE enables HE stakeholders to unlock AI’s potential, address its challenges, and lead meaningful innovation across teaching, learning, and institutional development.

As the third pillar of the INFINITE project, the AI Digital Hub  is an all-in-one interactive platform designed to strengthen the digital capabilities of higher education professionals. It provides free access to AI-powered tools, resources, and real-world examples to support teaching, learning, assessment, and professional growth. The Hub promotes collaboration, innovation, and knowledge-sharing by offering valuable insights into current AI trends, theoretical foundations, and practical applications—helping educators effectively integrate AI into their daily practice.

Interested in the use of AI in HE and would like to stay in touch with INFINITE for future news, activities and capacity building opportunities for HE staff, students and other stakeholders?
