Open Education NZ announces end of OER foundation services

Open Education NZ has announced that the Open Education Resource Foundation (OERF) is being dissolved, marking the end of its operations after more than 16 years supporting open education initiatives connected to the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Educational Resources (OER).

The decision follows changes to New Zealand’s vocational education landscape and the transfer of the Foundation’s sole shareholding to the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, which later had an impact on the organisation’s financial sustainability. As a result, staff roles including the Managing Director, UNESCO Chair in OER, and Open Source Technologist will be disestablished as of 19 December 2025.

OERF-maintained services, including free online course platforms, community discussion forums, and the WikiEducator project, will no longer be guaranteed beyond this date, and users are advised to back up data and seek alternative resources.
