Blackmagic released its Camera as a free iPhone app: now you can have high end digital film camera controls and image processing on your iPhone. Manually adjustable settings include more or less everything a camera operator would like to have: frame rate, shutter angle, white balance, ISO, focus, zoom, shutter.
The display shows all necessary recording parameters, plus a histogram, focus peaking, audio levels, and frame guides of your choice. Some smart features that camera operators appreciate are the addition of clapper data or metadata logging per clip (reel, scene, day/night, int/ext, good take…), enlarged viewfinder, cinematic look, exposure control, viewfinder gridlines etc. Just like in the full size Blackmagic cameras. In a way comparable with the Sony smartphone camera and the Sony Cloud recording, Blackmagic camera allows you to record to the Blackmagic Cloud Storage which gives immediate access to the files in DaVinci Resolve, with the additional advantage that you can start collaborating in the cloud on editing with proxies. If you are already working in the DaVinci and Blackmagic ecosystem, this camera is an excellent addition, because it uses the same user interface and camera controls as their cinema cameras. It can serve as a B-roll camera or as a run and gun camera for candid video or for vlogging and citizen journalism. The app makes use of of Apple’s iPhone Pro three-lens setup on the rear for lens selection. Support for external timecode sync and remote lens control make the camera app complete. The camera interface looks familiar if you have ever handled a Blackmagic camera. Recorded clips appear in the Media tab, from where they can be managed, and imported in DaVinci or the editor of your choice.
