Practical guidelines for assessment in the age of generative AI

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly reshaping higher education. While much of the discussion has focused on the risks of AI for academic integrity, a growing number of educators are asking: How can assessment evolve to support meaningful learning in a world where AI is widely available? The TaLAI Policy Guidelines for Assessment in the Context of GenAI in Higher Education offer a practical response, encouraging institutions to move beyond detection and restriction toward thoughtful, transparent, and learning-centered assessment practices. 

Rather than offering a single solution, the guidelines recognise that assessment in the age of AI requires a flexible and context-sensitive approach. Different disciplines, learning outcomes, and institutional priorities will require different strategies. What remains constant, however, is the need to place learning at the centre of assessment design. 

To support different stakeholders, the document is structured into three complementary segments

  1. Core Principles that provide the foundation for assessment in the age of GenAI. 
  1. Practical Guidelines for Teaching Staff focused on day-to-day assessment design and implementation. 
  1. Condensed Guidelines for Policymakers, Administrators, and Managers responsible for governance, quality assurance, and institutional leadership. 

Together, these segments offer a framework for ensuring that assessment remains transparent, meaningful, and aligned with learning outcomes while responding to technological developments. 

Guiding Principles for Assessment in the Age of AI 

The guidelines are grounded in several overarching principles. Assessment should remain aligned with learning outcomes, grading decisions should remain the responsibility of educators, and students should be informed about assessment criteria and any use of AI in the assessment process. The guidelines also emphasise transparency, quality assurance, academic integrity, and the need for institutions to continuously adapt as technologies evolve. 

Practical Guidance for Teaching Staff 

The guidelines also provide detailed recommendations for educators responsible for assessment design and implementation. They encourage teaching staff to provide clear but flexible assignment guidelines, demonstrate transparency in their own use of GenAI, and adopt innovative and diverse assessment methods. 

Particular importance is given to formative assessment, authentic learning activities, self-reflection, and constructive feedback. Educators are encouraged to redesign assignments to promote creativity, critical thinking, and real-world application of knowledge while supporting a learning environment where students can experiment, learn from mistakes, and develop their competences.  

The recommendations also advocate for a wider range of assessment formats, including presentations, classroom activities, digital projects, oral examinations, and quizzes based on students’ own work. At the same time, students should be supported in generating original work while using GenAI responsibly and without compromising academic integrity. 

Key Messages for Leaders and Policymakers 

Following discussions during the TaLAI Coffee Talk in March 2025, the guidelines were condensed into five high-level recommendations that provide a useful overview for institutional leaders, policymakers, administrators, and managers. 

The recommendations encourage institutions to: 

  • Design flexible, transparent, and innovative assessments.  
  • Prioritise formative, authentic, and competence-oriented approaches to evaluation.  
  • Emphasise self-reflection, constructive feedback, and academic integrity.  
  • Diversify assessment formats to support engagement and integrity.  
  • Integrate GenAI in a supportive way while safeguarding academic standards.  

Together, these recommendations highlight the strategic direction institutions should consider when reviewing assessment policies and practices in response to emerging AI technologies. 

Looking Ahead 

As GenAI continues to evolve, so must the way institutions think about assessment. The TaLAI guidelines don’t prescribe a single fix – they offer a framework that different disciplines and institutions can adapt, while keeping learning outcomes at the centre. 

The message across all three segments is consistent: this isn’t about choosing between innovation and integrity, or technology and human judgement. It’s about designing assessment that’s transparent, flexible, and genuinely focused on learning – with AI as one factor among many, not the defining one.
