The AI-LITERATE team was pleased to participate in the 6th International Media Literacy Research Symposium (IMLRS), held in Rome from 4–6 June 2025, bringing together researchers and practitioners from around the world to discuss the future of media literacy.

On the second day of the symposium, the AI-LITERATE team presented:“Mapping AI Literacy, Agency and Disinformation Resilience in Higher Education: Futures of Media and Information Literacy in an AI-driven Europe.” The presentation was delivered by Lucia Mesquita, Claudia Bellini, Eleonora Rossi, and Alice Pierluigi, representing Lusófona University (Portugal), the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy), and Dataninja (Italy).

The presentation introduced the framework developed within Work Package 2, which examines how higher education institutions across five European countries are integrating artificial intelligence into their policies and practices.

As generative AI becomes increasingly embedded in educational environments, universities face new challenges related to authorship, trust, academic integrity, bias, and disinformation. Through a qualitative analysis of institutional documents across six analytical dimensions, the study explores the relationship between AI literacy, institutional AI adoption, and disinformation resilience.

The preliminary findings suggest that while universities are making significant progress in developing ethical governance frameworks for AI, pedagogical implementation is advancing at a slower pace. The research highlights the need to rethink and expand media literacy frameworks to include responsible, critical, and civic-oriented approaches to AI literacy.

The presentation generated valuable discussions with participants and contributed to broader conversations at the symposium about the role of AI in education and the future of media literacy in Europe.
