On 7 July, the European Parliament adopted a new resolution entitled “A new strategy for media literacy and digital learning”, containing some key recommendations for future media literacy policy priorities of the EU and Member States. The report was coordinated by MEP Marcos Ros Sempere.
In the resolution, the EP recognises several important concerns including the fact that “approaches to media literacy and digital learning vary across the EU, with significant differences with regard to their incorporation into school curricula and in the level of financial or administrative support provided for related actions or programme and with regard to the competent authorities or bodies and the cooperation between them”. In this new approach to media literacy and digital learning, the resolution makes a number of important recommendations. These include stressing “that media literacy and digital learning should be reflected within broader EU initiatives aimed at safeguarding democratic processes, including in the context of the EU Democracy Shield” as well as including a call for a strengthening of the activities of EDMO and the Media Literacy Experts Group on media literacy “to support cooperation among Member States”.
