Teachers 4.0 Digital Age project, an Erasmus+ initiative led by EAVI, released a comprehensive set of recommendations for tackling disinformation through education. Published in May 2026, the report draws on national roundtables held across Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Poland, and Romania, as well as a European-level discussion, bringing key stakeholders together.
The report sends a clear central message that current efforts remain too fragmented. Media literacy initiatives are often small-scale, project-based, and dependent on individual teachers’ motivation, with little institutional backing or sustainable funding. To address this, the report calls for coherent national strategies that embed media and disinformation literacy across curricula as a cross-cutting competence, supported by mandatory teacher training, mentoring, and centralised, regularly updated resources.
At EU level, the report recommends using the European Democracy Shield to coordinate national efforts and avoid duplication, while ensuring flexibility for countries to adapt approaches locally. It also argues that existing legislation should be enforced more consistently before new rules are introduced, and that regulation should be paired with soft-law measures and public investment to build genuine ownership rather than mere compliance.
Country-specific findings are also worth noting. Italy highlighted a “skills paradox” among digital natives, meaning they are comfortable using digital tools, but often lack critical skills. Poland focused on the rapid challenges posed by AI, and Cyprus called for a unifying national strategy to replace its current patchwork of disconnected efforts.
EAVI is now coordinating meetings with Members of the European Parliament to discuss these findings. The project’s final event will be held on 23 October in Brussels.
