Cleaning up voice recordings with Studio Sound

Studio Sound uses AI to remove background noise and echo from your audio recordings. Hum, HVAC, traffic noises, even background voices can all disappear to a large extent with this application. Of course it does not mean that you should no longer pay attention to recording good quality audio, but accidents happen, or conditions are not always ideal and in that case Studio Sound can come to the rescue. We did a test on an audio file with the typical reverb from a large auditorium, the long audio cable was picking up a steady rumble, the signal to noise ratio coming from the audio mixer in the back of the room was not great and on top of all that, we had some radio interference resulting in an interrupted high frequency tone. All got nicely cleaned up, really impressive, and certainly competitive with the usual tools out there in the market or built into audio editors.

Studio Sound is part of the Descript set of tools and applications that uses AI to process, edit, enhance video and audio. That Studio Sound is an integrated part of this tool, makes it a bit tricky to find your way into it: the user interface is not very helpful, there are only few parameters that are accessible, and there is little or no indication of what is going on in the background, but that said, it does what it promises. Descript has a basic free starters version and offers a number of tools that can be used to make your videos and audio materials better or more accessible, for example by overdubbing foreign language videos or by removing filler words  like “um”, “ah,” “like”, and “you know.”
